Line Design – String Art Project
We will be starting working on our line design project during 3rd Quarter. It is a project adapted from my own 6th grade math teacher, who used it as a way to teach sequences, geometric designs, and angles.
The materials necessary for this project are:
1) Wood – At least 5/8 inch thick. Wood size should be 12” x 12” or 12” x 16” or 16” x 24” depending on the design.
2) Fabric – Solid Color (dark is best). It should over lap at least 1 inch on all sides. Any fabric store or Walmart are good places to find material.
3) Nails – 3d 1¼ inch finishing nails are best
4) Thread – Regular Sewing Thread; 3 colors usually, though 3 shades of the same color also looks good.
Covering the board:
1) When you put the fabric on the board, use masking tape to secure it on the backside.
2) Fold the material on the backside like you wrap a present.
Nailing the Design:
1) Orient and tape the paper design on the front of the board.
2) Nail in a finishing nail into each of the hole markings. A few hard taps should secure them into the board.
3) Try and make the nails all even in height.
4) Take off the paper design.
Stringing the Design:
1) Before you begin, decide on the pattern (usually large to small) and the colors)
2) Tie the end of the string to a bottom of the starting nail. Secure it.
3) Follow your predetermined pattern (n + 8, etc.) back and forth until it loops around to the starting nail. Secure it again.
4) You can do a small loop around each nail if you want.
5) Make sure the line is taut and not slack.
6) Repeat with a different color or shade half way up the nail.
7) Repeat with a third color or shade along the top of the nail.
